I love how every so often clothing styles from the past come back to haunt us ,(recently I’ve been noticing a major shift back to the vibrant attire of the late 80’s and early 90’s) but thats not what this post’s about. This post’s about music, I love music; In fact, I dont believe that the term love is even strong enough to actually encompass my affinity for bobbing my head up and down for hours while turning a deaf ear to the rest of you. I think and everyone agrees that there is a notable difference between the mainstream music of ealier eras, specifically the 1980’s and late 70’s, and the majority of audio in our current twenty first century. Before I continue it should be noted as to what the meaning of art is for future reference: Art is any creation that illicits a powerful emotional response from one or more people. With that definition in mind we immerse ourselves into the depths of music as an art form. The music of the 1970’s, and 80’s was the type of music that could give you a rush without you being inebriated and envelop you in a flood of chills time and time again; however in contrast most of the music of this decade seems to provide satisfaction only up to a certain amount of listens and past that point it ceases to be worthy of anything except hindsight acknowledgement of once being good. From Michael Jackson, Depeche Mode, Flashdance and Imagination to Expose Duran Duran, UB40 and Cindy Lauper they’re music is magnificent today and shall remain so tomorrow. The music of today’s Lady Gagas, 50 cent’s, Kings of Leons’, Taylor Swifts, Christina Aguileras, Nsyncs and Jenifer lopezs just doesn’t give a similar emotional stimulus like the oldies do. Let me interject at this point to inform readers that I am not some 40 year old guy bashing the music of today’s youth I am a member of today’s youth, a college student in fact, simply declaring a noticeable growing distaste for our current mainstream music. I was born after many of the popular 80’s artists such as Michael Jackson and Chaka Kahn were past their prime and didnt immediately listen to their music from a young age but rather I began a gradual migration back to the music of earlier decades around my freshman year in high school and have never looked back. I am also not stating that all of the music that has been produced in these last two decades is unsatisfactory (I listen to a myriad of current artists) just that there is a disparity between the amount of current music that produces lingering appreciation and those of the late 70’s and 80’s are clearly doing so.

Previously, I blogged about the trailer that was released for ‘This Is It’, the Michael Jackson documentary/film that is coming out on October 28th.

Following on from seeing the trailer, a few friends and I decided that we simply had to go see this, so I stayed up until midnight Sunday to book on a local cinema’s website.
Booked us in for a cinema in Greenwich, London, which is just outside the O2 Arena – kinda apt really! The showing that we’re booked into will be on the first evening and is on an IMAX screen with ’superior digital sound’, plus we have Premier class seating – woo – the only way to see this, I’m sure!
As an aside, I really disliked the confusion that surrounded the release of the tickets for the movie – it caused me no end of headaches, and I don’t see why cinemas couldn’t have been allowed to have announced listings the day before, for example. Plus, several cinemas had tickets onsale on Saturday afternoon (wrong 12:01 I guess!) and all had tickets on at 23:55!
Hopefully ‘This Is It’ will live up to the hype, for now I remain most excited!!
Muammar Gadaffi’s recent appearance at the U.N. has sparked more rumors that the de facto leader of Libya may be suffering from a rare form of “Jacko” syndrome… named after the late singer Michael Jackson. It’s not actually a disease, but a mental affliction that causes an individual to emulate the King of Pop by altering one’s appearance to mimic Jackson, eventually resulting in a character that looks like an escapee from a carnival side-show.
In the case of Gadaffi, also referred as “Guide of the First of September Great Revolution of the Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya,” “Brotherly Leader and Guide of the Revolution,” or simply “Gadaffi Duck,” the change in his appearance was first noticed in the late ’70s as was the case with Jackson. Below is the evidence of the changes in the appearance of both through the years:
Early 1970s
Michael Jackson (L) enjoying the success of his first hit as a solo performer, Ben, a song about a pet rat. A youthful Gadaffi (R) was in his “Pre-Accessorized” phase at this time, although he is sporting his best attempt at an Afro. Ironically, in later years, his appearance would take on a similar look to the rat that was the subject of Jackson’s song.
Late 70s
In the late 70s, disco was king, and both Jackson and Gadaffi were living it, although Jackson had the look down pat. While Jackson was singing Billie Jean, Gadaffi was going more for the John Travolta character in Saturday Night Fever. Unfortunately, Gaddafi lacked the charisma of Tony Manero and came across as more like Tony Manure. While both men were at their peak, neither had the good sense to stay with their look. They both seemed to operate on the philosophy of Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough. This would ultimately lead to ridicule for both of them.
The 80s With the end of Disco, both chose to go in the direction of the decidedly more macho look of the military. While Jackson turned to a Hollywood costume designer for his look, Gadaffi visited the Army/Navy surplus stores of several countries, buying up ribbons and awards along with various uniform components, winding up looking like a military leader without a country.
The 90s
With the military look having run its course, the next step each chose was to make not-so-subtle changes to their face. In Jackson’s case, he had access to the finest plastic surgeons in the world. Sadly, Gadaffi had to settle for a Libyan surgeon whose only experience at plastic surgery was in turning a single-humped camel into a two-humper, as the results clearly showed. He tried to make up for it by going with even more outlandish outfits. Unlike Jackson, however, he didn’t have access to Tinseltown designers, so he had to settle for Omar the Tent-Maker.
2000-Present The recent years have been unkind to both. While Jackson kept updating his face more often than Windows Vista, eventually his skull could only take so much and he had to go back to what was essentially the same nose he had as the Scarecrow in The Wiz. And by now, Gadaffi’s plastic surgeon/veterinarian, lacking the sophistication of western doctors, resorted to Bondo and Spackle to maintain Gadaffi’s aging face but to no avail, and today he bears a striking resemblance to… well, remember Jackson’s hit song I referred to earlier? Note: Neither photo above has been altered in appearance other than to fit the available space.
Since Jacko’s death in June, Gadaffi has been a sullen, sad dictator seemingly without inspiration. The depth of his depression, however, was not fully realized until his recent visit to the United Nations last week. After his speech, Gadaffi disappeared from all additional meetings and parties. However, Grand Rants has been able to confirm a sighting up him later in the day in Greenwich Village that illustrates just how far Gadaffi has fallen since Jackson’s passing. Sadly, the below photograph, to the best of my knowledge, has not been altered in any way either.
He was later seen wandering the streets of Soho London asking if anyone had Boy George’s phone number.

Bu bizzat yaşadığım olaydandır belki de Michael Jackson’ın ölümünün ardından intihar eden 12 kişi beni hiç de şaşırtmadı. Hatta o kadar ünlü bir insan için 12 az bile! Ben insanlar toplu intihara kalkışır, moonwalk yaparak gökdelenlerden atlar, hatta işi daha da ileriye götürüp aya gider ve moonwalk yaparak kendini uzay boşluğuna bırakır diye düşünmüştüm. Kimbilir, belki de bu “kutsal” yolda öldükleri için Thriller’da olduğu gibi dirilir ve zamanında onları anlamadığımız için bize küçümseyen gözlerle bakarlardı!

Bu kişiler genellikle ellerinde bir fotoğrafla estetik cerrahilere koşuyor ve “Beni acilen buna benzetin! Tıpkısının aynısı olsun!“diyor. Zamanında MTV’de yayınlanan bir program vardı ve buraya katılan insanları sevdikleri ünlülere benzetiyorlardı. Bir keresinde ikiz kardeşler, Brad Pitt olmak adına tonlarca operasyon geçirmişti. Bir düşünün dünya üzerinde 3 tane Brad Pitt!
Yok, canım tatlı, acıya katlanamam diyorsanız en azından Kate Moss olmak adına tuvaletlere koşup kendinizi kusturabilirsiniz herhalde. Evet, evet bu kadarını yapabilirsiniz!
Şimdi sorarım size, eğer siz de dünya üzerinde sizi bu derece “ölümüne” seven insanların varlığından haberdar olsaydınız Lindsay Lohan gibi davranmaz, Britney Spears gibi saçlarınızı kazımaz, Michael Jackson gibi izole bir yaşam sürmez ya da sonsuza dek yaşamak istemez miydiniz? Çünkü bilirsiniz ölümünüz dünya üzerinde yaptığınız son “show”unuz olacak ve kimbilir belki de yaşarken taktığınız eldivenler, giydiğiniz ayakkabılar gibi bir “akım” haline gelecek, üzerine tonlarca yorum yapılacak…. LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) — Michael Jackson feared his father so much he would faint or vomit sometimes when his father entered the room — even when the pop singer was an adult, according to a book written by a former Jackson confidant.
“The Michael Jackson Tapes” includes Jackson talking about his fear of growing old, his relationship with children, his friendships with Madonna and Brooke Shields, and his remarkable shyness around people that made his surround himself with mannequins.
Jackson opened up to Rabbi Shmuley Boteach for 30 hours of interviews, which were taped nine years ago and intended for a book Jackson wanted written, Boteach said.
“He was trying to reclaim his life,” Boteach said Friday in an NBC “Today Show” interview.
Jackson, who died on June 25 of what the coroner found to be a deadly combination of drugs, “lost the will to live, I think he was just going through the motions of life toward the end,” Boteach told NBC.
CNN has not independently confirmed Jackson’s quotes in the book, but Boteach was known to be a spiritual adviser to Jackson for several years beginning about 1999.
Ken Sunshine, spokesman for the family, including the singer’s father, Joe, issued a statement on the book. “We are not going to dignify this with a comment,” he said.
The book was not published during Jackson’s lifetime because of the pop star’s child molestation trial, which ended with an acquittal in 2005, the author said. The author said Jackson’s arrest ended any interest in a book about him.
“I don’t want to grow old,” Jackson is quoted as saying in one interview with Boteach.
“When the body breaks down and you start to wrinkle, I think it’s so bad,” Jackson said.
Jackson talked to Boteach about why he was drawn to children, especially those who were sick.
“I love them. I love them,” he said.
Helping children enjoy their childhood is his mission, Jackson said.
“I feel that this is something really, really in my heart that I am supposed to do, and I feel so loved by giving my love, and I know that’s what they need,” he said.
Jackson said that while adults “appreciate me artistically as a singer and a songwriter and a dancer and a performer,” children “just want to have some fun and to give love and have love and they just want to be loved and held”.
Boteach, in an interview about two years before Jackson’s November 2003 arrest, asked Jackson about the young cancer patient who would later become his main accuser.
“He’s special,” Jackson said.
Boteach asked Jackson whether by speaking to people like the boy “part of the pain goes away for them”.
“Absolutely,” Jackson said. “Because every time I talk to him he is in better spirits. When I spoke to him last night he said, ‘I need you. When are you coming home?’ I said, ‘I don’t know.’ He said, ‘I need you, Michael.’ Then he calls me ‘Dad’”.
Michael Jackson’s taped statements about his father’s treatment of him as a child echoed what he has said previously.
“He was rough, the way he would beat you, you know, was hard,” Jackson said. “He would make you strip nude first. He would oil you down. It would be a whole ritual. He would oil you down so when the flip of an ironing cord hit you, you know, and, it was just like me dying, and you had whips all over your face, your back, everywhere. And I always hear my mother like, ‘No, Joe, you’re gonna kill him. You’re gonna kill him. No.’ And I would just give up, like there was nothing I could do. And I hated him for it. Hated him.”
Joe Jackson has denied physically abusing his son. “Now, Michael was never beaten by me, I’ve never beaten at all,” he told CNN’s Larry King in July. He did suggest he used spankings for disciplining his children.
Another Michael Jackson quote from the book alleged emotional abuse by Joe Jackson:
“God bless my father because he did some wonderful things and he was brilliant, he was a genius, but one day he said, ‘If you guys ever stop singing I will drop you like a hot potato.’ It hurt me. You would think he would think, ‘These kids have a heart and feelings.’ Wouldn’t he think that would hurt us? If I said something like that to Prince and Paris, that would hurt. You don’t say something like that to children and I never forgot it. It affects my relationship with him today”.
Jackson told Boteach he was still “scared of my father to this day”.
“My father walked in the room — and God knows I am telling the truth — I have fainted in his presence many times. I have fainted once to be honest. I have thrown up in his presence because when he comes in the room and this aura comes and my stomach starts hurting and I know I am in trouble. He is so different now. Time and age has changed him and he sees his grandchildren and he wants to be a better father. It is almost like the ship has sailed its course, and it is so hard for me to accept this other guy that is not the guy I was raised with. I just wished he had learned that earlier”.
In the excerpts provided to CNN by the book’s publisher, there were no quotes from Jackson discussing his drug use, but Boteach does write about what he saw during the several years he was Jackson’s spiritual adviser, starting in 1999.
While Boteach said he never personally saw Jackson use drugs, he did suspect it. “In the time that I knew him, he always seemed intent on me having a positive view of him and nothing untoward was ever done in my presence,” he wrote.
While their close relationship ended around the time of the molestation charges, Boteach said Jackson’s parents reached out to him later for help in convincing him to enter drug rehab.
“Perhaps I could inspire Michael to make that decision, and his parents thought I could at least help,” Boteach said. “But I knew they were wrong. Michael had long since ceased taking my counsel. He found my advice too demanding. I was an irritant and was treated as such”.
He said he told Joe and Katherine Jackson that “it was imperative for them to save their son’s life by becoming available parents in his greatest hour of need”.
Sometimes those closest to Jackson were not people — but mannequins, the book said. Jackson said he was so shy at times he surrounded himself with dummies.
“Because I felt I needed people, someone, and I didn’t have,” he said. “I was too shy to be around real people”.
Boteach, in the NBC interview Friday, said it made his skin crawl to hear that.
“His celebrity had created a degree of isolation where he could not simply feel comfortable around other people,” Boteach said. “He thought that everybody wanted something from him. He felt that he was trapped in this cocoon of fame and that there was some exploitative relationship with virtually everyone that he met.”
The book does offer insight into Jackson’s dating of celebrity women, including actress Brooke Shields.
“That was one of the loves of my life,” Jackson said. “I just wished she loved me as much as I loved her, you know”.
He told Boteach one problem he had with women was their jealousy of his fame.
“They admire you and know you’re wonderful and great, but just they’re jealous because they wish they were in your place, with they were in your shoes. And ‘M’ is one of them — Madonna. Hate to say that on tape”.
CNN asked Madonna’s publicist Liz Rosenberg for a response: ”Madonna was very fond of Michael Jackson (as she clearly expressed in her tribute to him at the VMA’s) and I doubt anything in the book will change her mind,” Rosenberg said.

Mariah Carey never fails to entertain me. One minute she’s acting like a complete diva, the next she seeems like the sweetest, most genuine person ever.
But currently, I’m loving that she’s so obsessed with herself that she has to remind us all the time about her most iconic looks (a la the recreation of the Butterfly photo shoot). Case in point: these two pictures–the last one taken from a recent night out.
Anyways, in other Mariah news, she will be dedicating her newest album “Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel” to Michael Jackson. Also, Elle magazine will be featured in Mariah’s CD as well (from the source): “’Angel’ comes with a mini magazine tucked into the CD jacket, produced by Elle and featuring ads for Carey’s new fragrance and movie (”Precious”) as well as Mariah’s lists of favorite things and interviews with her and husband Nick Cannon. It’s a first, but what else do you expect from Mariah Carey?”
Gah, that thing is huge! I wish there were more people in the private sector who were willing to search for creatures as fascinating as the giant squid. If I had unlimited money, I’d be sure and set apart a good portion of it to search for bizarre creatures like the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot.

I’m glad to hear that those who got to see the speech felt like she at least knew what she was talking about. My rational mind is telling me otherwise, but I just want to believe that Sarah Palin is still a viable candidate for the presidency. I’m sure I’ll take flack for this from the more center-left-of-center readers (if there are any), but I do think she’d be a great president if she spent a few years in the senate getting more familiar with foreign affairs and the technicalities of the office of the presidency. But then again, I’m overly optimistic.

Mackenzie Phillips Reveals She Slept With Her Own Father
This really is a shame. It’s hard to imagine that someone could get so into drugs that she has a 10 year affair with her father. I wish Mackenzie the best and hope that hopefully she’s cleaned up her act. If I’m remembering correctly she had a very interesting singing voice, and I hope she hasn’t totally lost it.

I don’t really know how I feel about a song being released after the artists death. Chances are I won’t like the song anyway so it doesn’t really matter.

I’m gonna “re-rock” with you. ‘This Is It,’ an unheard new single by Michael Jackson, will be released on October 12th according to BBC News.
Sony Music said that the song, featuring backing vocals by the surviving Jackson brothers, will be the closing number on the first of a two-disk album. The second disk will include unheard versions of classic Jackson hits.
Jackson had been working with Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas and solo artist Akon on material prior to his death but writing and recording credits on the single are unclear.
“This song only defines, once again, what the world already knows – that Michael is one of God’s greatest gifts,” explained music executive John McClain. McClain co-produced Jackson’s new two-disk album and also is serving as co-executor of his will.
The song is being touted as the first new music to be released by Jackson since his death this past June. The title is inspired by the comeback shows Jackson scheduled at London’s O2 arena. Jackson died during rehearsals.
In addition to the new music, a film also titled ‘This Is It’ will contain clips of Jackson’s rehearsal footage for the O2 concerts. The song is to appear in the film’s closing credits.
Michael Jackson was one of the world’s most influential and commercially successful entertainers. His album ‘Thriller‘ remains the best-selling album of all time. His unexpected death on June 29th led to a global outpouring of grief among music fans. He was 50.

A Sony Picutures divulgou que a trilha sonora do filme documentário, This Is It, sobre a turnê que Michael Jackson faria em Londres, terá um música inédita do Rei do Pop, que foi batizada com o nome do filme.
A música terá backing vocals dos irmãos do cantor, não foi divulgado se a música foi composta antes ou depois da morte de Michael. O single de “This Is It” será lançado no dia 12 de outubro, duas semanas antes da estréia do filme. No documentário ela será tocada durante os créditos finais.

Argentina se suma a la convocatoria a través de Thrill Argentina con el apoyo de La Doble A (productora de cine, publicidad y contenidos), impulsando una colecta de alimentos no perecederos durante el evento.
Para registrarse, los participantes deberán descargar el formulario de inscripción, completarlo y enviarlo por mail a thrillargentina@gmail.com (el registro no es obligatorio, todos van a poder bailar y/o asistir al evento de todos modos, sólo nos interesa para llevar un control de la asistencia).
El lugar de la convocatoria aún no se ha definido, se publicará en unos días a través del blog.
No es necesario ser un bailarín profesional ni un fanático de Michael Jackson, lo importante es participar y colaborar con un alimento.

Uma declaração polêmica de Shmuley Boteach, famoso rabino e apresentador de programas que assessorou Michael Jackson no começo da década, ao jornal israelense Ha’aretz trouxe mais rumores sobre a morte do cantor.
Segundo Boteach, contrariando as conclusões de homicídio da autópsia do Rei do Pop, Michael teria praticamente ‘se suicidado’, por tomar uma overdose de medicamentos que sabia serem letais.
“Michael sabia o que estava fazendo. Ele sabia que os remédios que estava tomando, naquela quantidade, poderiam matá-lo a qualquer momento”, contou Boteach.
O rabino ainda afirmou que diversas pessoas próximas ao astro o teriam alertado e tentado fazer com que parasse de se automedicar, mas ele sentia muitas dores e não as suportava.
“É muito triste e trágico ele ter vivido com tanta dor, e não ter conseguido pará-la”, completou o rabino.
E Boteach disse também que os médicos de Michael Jackson eram muito ‘questionáveis’ e o cantor vivia rodeado deles, pois sempre achava uma razão para tê-los por perto, como uma simples queda.
“Ele foi bom em sua vida e fez muitas pessoas felizes. Para muitas delas, foi muito especial. Mas também foi culpado de delitos muito graves, pelos quais merecia ter sido condenado se fosse culpado”, polemizou ainda mais o rabino.
Vale lembrar que Shmuley Boteach pertencia à lista de inimigos do cantor, revelada por Dieter Wiesner, ex-empresário de Michael Jackson, ao programa Entertainment Tonight.

El patriarca del clan Jackson, Joe Jackson, sostiene que podría haber salvado la vida de su hijo Michael si el personal de seguridad de éste le hubiera permitido acercase al cantante en las semanas previas a su muerte.
En una entrevista publicada hoy por el diario Bild am Sonntag, el que fuera el representante de los “Jackson 5″ explica que sabía que su hijo tomaba potentes analgésicos desde hace 25 años, después de las graves quemaduras que sufrió durante el rodaje de un anuncio para televisión.
Fue, sin embargo, el mayor de los hijos de Michael, Prince Michael, de 12 años, quien le contó que el cantante tenía pinchazos en los brazos, prueba de que le estaban administrando medicamentos por vía intravenosa.
Jackson, de 81 años, subraya que lo intentó “todo” para poder acercarse a su hijo en las semanas previas a su muerte pero que, en cuanto llegaba a la casa del músico, su personal de seguridad le impedía la entrada. Llegó incluso a llamar a la policía.

Respecto a las insistentes críticas que le acusan de haber maltratado a sus hijos, Jackson afirma que sí les propinó “alguna bofetada” cuando no se comportaban, pero insiste en que “también los maestros lo hacían en la escuela”.
“Hoy los métodos de crianza son distintos y también yo lo haría de otra forma hoy”, apunta.
Sostiene que los duros ensayos musicales a los que sometía a sus hijos respondían a que eran “negros en un negocio dominado por los blancos”.
“Sabía que Michael podía ser más grande que Elvis Presley, pero que los blancos no lo permitirían nunca. Debía dirigir a los chicos a través de un de mar lleno de tiburones. Y si me lo pregunta, sí, fue más grande que Elvis”, argumenta.
El patriarca afirma que tras la muerte de su hijo, el pasado 25 de junio a la edad de 50 años, no pudo llorar, como tampoco lloró tras fallecer su propio padre. “Lloro por dentro. Sólo cuando oigo cantar a Michael me saltan las lágrimas”, añade.
Michael Jackson fue enterrado a principios de mes en el cementerio Forest Lawn de Glendale, en el condado de Los Ángeles (EU), una semana después de que el informe forense calificara su muerte de “homicidio” por intoxicación aguda de un potente anestésico de uso hospitalario.
Las investigaciones policiales tienen como principal protagonista al médico personal del cantante, Conrad Murray, quien declaró haber administrado a Jackson el fármaco propofol, a petición del artista, pocas horas antes de su muerte.

So, The Root is covering The Cosby Show and its cultural influence to celebrate the NBC series’ 25th anniversary, in a manner similar to how they reflected on Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing. Now, once again aware of the problematics of my identity with regard to fandom, I will admit that growing up a white girl in the rural suburbs of Houston, I totes wanted to be in the Huxtable family. I would have been fine being one of Rudy’s friends (I was probably closest to the shy, chubby white boy). Specifically though, I aspired to be like Clair. Admittedly a glib comparison, but maybe young women and girls of many different racial and ethnic identities have ascribed a similar aspirational status to our first lady.
Many folks have rightly critiqued the show for its idyllic, comforting, and unrealistic depiction of the charmed Huxtable clan against the racially charged climate informed the social dimensions of AIDS, drug addiction, incarceration, wage gaps, single-family incomes, education, and other major issues that many believe were ignored, if not outright caused, by the Reagan administration. And these are, for the most part, valid critiques. Indeed, Kanye West spoke and continues to speak for many people when he says “I ain’t one of the Cosbys, I didn’t go to Hillman” in “Can’t Tell Me Nothin’.” I’d even go so far as to point out that this was true for many prime time families by the end 0f the 1980s: there’s not a college degree between the Connors, the Bundys, and the Simpsons. Assuredly, the classed dimensions of racial inequality were in Bill Cosby’s mind, even going so far as to originally conceptualize Clair as being a plumber of Dominican descent and later, pairing up again with Phylicia Rashād on Cosby, making their characters decidedly more working class.
And I don’t think we can talk about The Cosby Show’s influence without mentioning how no other show with an African American principle cast has since followed its legacy. Fledgling networks like FOX and, later, the WB and UPN, would incorporate a wide range of prime time programming featuring African Americans, though often met with middling to low ratings, short life cycles, and diminished corporate interests in representational politics as networks began to flourish.
And of course, we can’t discuss The Cosby Show without mentioning Dr. Cosby’s troubling history with partiarchy and sometimes limited view of what is considered respectable mediated representations from/of African Americans. That said, while I empathize with Lisa Bonet’s reported run-ins with Cosby, I’ll hedge that Angel Heart does look fucking terrible.
That said, The Cosby Show was a considerable cultural milestone and a damn entertaining sitcom that did an admirable job widening the scope and depth of representation for African Americans on prime time network television. And they were really funny.
I’d also like to add, echoing Erin Evans’s piece on the show’s theme song, that The Cosby Show broadened the scope and depth of African Americans’ contribution to music. Jazz, blues, rock and roll, hip hop, gospel, classical, Afrocuban, Broadway. It’s all there. “Kiss Me” was discursive and malleable, changing arrangements, historical moments, and generic arrangements from season to season.
Sometimes these contributions were peripheral, much like many of the paintings that hung on the home’s walls — Vanessa’s Michael Jackson poster most immediately comes to mind.

Sometimes these contributions dialoged with other musical forms associated with traditionally coded “white” culture (my mother would always giggle when opera tenor Placido Domingo sang to Clair; I’m always reminded of my mother in episodes involving Rudy’s teacher, played by Broadway’s salty Elaine Stritch, now recognizeable to many as Mother Donaghy on 30 Rock).
And sometimes music’s shifting racial dynamics back-and-forthed within one body, a point I’d argue is evident in Olivia’s Village coffeehouse performance of Carl Perkins’ “Blue Suede Shoes.” This is a noteworthy song selection, as punk legend Legs McNeil argues in Don Letts’s documentary Punk: Attitude that it is one of rock’s most political songs and an influence to punk’s stripped-down, anti-hippie, confrontation style, as it’s a song about personal freedom (to single in on McNeil’s comment, start the clip at 7:33). That said, I’d like for none of to step on Olivia’s face. Thanks.
Let’s close with Olivia, and extend this discussion of musical moments to focus on the ladies, both within the Huxtable family and within music culture writ large. In addition to Olivia’s performance, let’s remember Vanessa’s struggle with the clarinet, enforcing that not all black people are inherently musical. Let’s remember Clair singing with Stevie Wonder. Let’s remember Lena Horne and Miriam Makeba. Let’s remember Rudy jubilant lip-synced performance of Margie Hendricks’s part in Ray Charles’s version of “Night Time Is the Right Time” for her grandparents anniversary. And let’s not forget: don’t step on their blue suede shoes.

In life many things are important, so we think.
From the moment we are born we learn things like friends are important, family is important, the newest music is important, the newest fasion is important, and so on. But what makes something really important in life? And what makes us think we can’t live without that person or item in our life?
I’m crazy about Michael Jackson and Taryll Jackson. They are a part of joy in my life. They have hurt me in the past, but they also made me happy. I wouldn’t want to live without them and I appreciate it I am able to “know” them. But is that a good thing? Is it a good thing I want to hold on to these 2 people in my life? Isn’t it something I hold against myself to grow further?
I know moving on is better then staying on the same place. But one thing is for sure, I will never stop loving Michael or Taryll. Yet, it feels like something that isn’t good for me. It keeps me busy every day of my life. The death of Michael has cut into me so deep, I never thought I would miss him so much. A lot of people don’t understand and that’s okay. Other people might recognize this feeling with other people, or maybe items they think they ‘need’ to own to be happy.
What is it that makes me love these 2 guys so much? Even though I know I will never meet Michael anymore, and the chance of meeting Taryll is smaller then winning the lottery. Still I want to hold on to them.

Michael Jackson’s concert were stage shows that offered spectacular choreography on the kind of scale even Cecille B. DeMille would have dismissed as ‘outlandish’. The man may be gone but, thanks to new concert film This Is It, he’ll be back on screens for one final appearance.

I gotta be honest…I didn’t watch the VMA’s last night (do they still MAKE music videos? Because I haven’t seen any on television in forever…). I was too busy hanging out with my wife & kids and then we tuned in to watch some more Dexter (which is my new favorite show). But this morning I kept reading all about the Kanye West silliness so I went searching and came up on THIS site which showcased some of the highlights (or lowlights) and I had to share my thoughts…
He’s an idiot.
1. Kanye West has run his course. If there ever was an artist who has taken the limelight and watched it flicker out, it is this tired act. I don’t care how talented he THINKS he is, the truth is he is simply another rapper who has managed to stay popular by making a spectacle of himself in public. Here’s a thought, Kanye. If you’re so good, why not just let your “music” speak for itself? I seriously doubt Beyonce Knowles needs YOU to stand up for her at the freakin’ VMA’s. My feeling is that Beyonce will be around a lot longer than you will. No matter how robbed she might have felt (Yes…her video is VERY good. But still…), Beyonce is a class act who realizes, in the grand scheme of things, that a VMA award is little more than a trinket in her closet. For you to attempt to steal the limelight for her is bull. What you meant to do was steal the limelight for yourself. And unfortunately, it appears that your little plan worked. It’s all anybody is talking about today. But I think you’re an ass who needs to be sent a message. So for that, I will not ever buy another Kanye West song or album…ever. And if another artist uses you in their song, I won’t buy it either. You are dead to me Kanye West (not that you were ever high on my list anyway…).
2. The Michael Jackson tribute with Janet making an appearance is very cool. The dancing was excellent and seeing Janet perform in honor of her brother was top notch. Nicely done by the crew!
3. Lady GaGa is still a mystery to me. I’ve received so many responses to the blog that I wrote about her and I keep getting a huge amount of hits from folks “googling” her name (over 5,700 hits today at this point). I have no idea what the public likes about her so much. At the VMA’s last night she performed her latest single, “Paparazzi”, and then managed to hang herself onstage while covering herself in blood. I get the imagery and she was basically just emulating her video for the show, but you know she is one of the best artists out there today when it comes to manipulating the media. She is popular because she knows how to use the paparazzi. And her video and her performance last night speaks for itself. She has become the latest Marilyn Manson. And that’s cool, I guess. But look where Manson is today. And I have to believe she is following the same career path.
4. Beyonce has ass for days. And she can sing too. But I still can’s stand that “Put A Ring On It” song….
5. Paula Abdul hosting a show called “Divas”? Seems perfectly logical…
The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards payed tribute to music icon Michael Jackson last night, including an introduction by Madonna and a pretty cool performance by Janet Jackson. Madonna and Michael Jackson weren’t the only 80s influences popping up at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards though. According to MTV.com, “Passion Pit’s The Reeling pays homage to the 80s not only in its sound but with the creative animated video where everything is a collage.” The video was nominated in the Breakthrough Video category but lost to Lessons Learned by Matt and Kim. The Best New Artist award went to Lady GaGa for “Poker Face”. Even though I can hear simularities to the 80s in some of the synth sounds, I’m not real sure that Lady GaGa is that 80s sounding. La compañía NOKIA producirá nuevos celulares con materiales reciclados como botellas de plástico y latas de aluminio. Esto es posible gracias a los resultados obtenido por Nokia en sus recientes investigaciones de innovación, desarrollo de tecnología y política ambiental.
El nuevo concepto `Remade´, consiste en la fabricación de celulares utilizando solamente materiales reciclados, para así minimizar el uso de recursos naturales y permitir una utilización de energía mas eficiente. Además de botellas de plástico y latas de aluminio se utilizaran neumáticos para la producción de terminales. En su interior también se utilizaran otras tecnologías nobles con el medio ambiente que permiten el ahorro de energía sin comprometer el estilo.
El concepto remade forma parte del programa denominado “Homegrown” que busca fabricar celulares de ultima tecnología pero a la vez amigables con el ambiente, además de facilitar la tecnología a la población y contribuir positivamente en la solución de problemas sociales y ambientales.
Es bueno saber que aun hay empresas interesadas por ofrecer productos de calidad sin afectar el tan importante medio ambiente… o ¿será mera publicidad?

Um dos produtores do evento, Georg Kindel, afirmou que boa parte dos artistas principais da homenagem enfrentam “conflitos de agenda”. “Talvez tenhamos subestimado essas questões”, afirmou Kindel.
O anúncio de hoje encerra uma série de notícias sobre atrações confirmadas para o show e, posteriores cancelamentos. Artistas como Mary J. Blige, Chris Brown e Natalie Cole, anunciados pela organização como presenças confirmadas, não poderiam participar da homenagem.
A ideia original dos organizadores era sediar o show em um castelo do século 17 em Viena.
Georg Kindel não afirmou onde o show acontecerá em Londres, apenas disse que a homenagem agora é planejada para a primeira quinzena de junho de 2010.
Janet Jackson no ha visto la televisión desde que su hermano Michael murió de repente en Los Ángeles el 25 de junio. Se ha bloqueado a sí misma por completo de la cobertura histérica de los medios de comunicación de su muerte – tal como lo comprobamos. “Te volvería loco”, dice ella. “La gente puede tener piel de rinoceronte, pero hay un momento en que algo va a hacer daño. Fue una celebración familiar, los niños corrían alrededor de Jackson, y ella y su hermano mayor la pasaron bien, comieron comida tailandesa, y se fastidiaron entre sí. “Nos divertimos mucho ese día”, dice ella, su voz suave, casi inaudible. “Seguimos llamándonos después y diciéndonos lo grande que estuvo”.
Janet salió poco después de su cumpleaños a comenzar a trabajar en el film “Why Did I Get Married Too” de Tyler Perry. Ella estaba en el set en Atlanta, cuando recibió la llamada de que Michael había muerto. Ella regresó de inmediato a Los Angeles, sumergiéndose de lleno en el ín timo dolor familiar expuesto a un público hambriento. Cuando se trata de algo como esto, así, tan serio, tan doloroso, tan traumático, puedo manejarlo”.
Janet se ha desenvuelto en público por más de dos décadas. Rhythm Nation 1814, su álbum innovador, fue lanzado hace 20 años este otoño. Ella ha vendido más de 100 millones de álbumes en todo el mundo y 41 sencillos Números 1 en Billboard. Su tour “fuera-de-este-mundo”, su indeleble estilo de baile, y audaz, provocativo, pero la presencia siempre humana sólo es igualada por la de su difunto hermano. En 1995 el vídeo futurista de “Scream”, para el que colaboró con Michael, hay una escena donde los hermanos se dan codazos por el control remoto. “Sí”, dice sonriendo. “Nos divertimos mucho en ese entonces. Organizamos nuestros días juntos y salir para un almuerzo vegetariano en el Templo de Oro en Los Ángeles. Estábamos muy ocupados, pero nos dimos un tiempo”.
Y mientras que el vídeo de 7 millones de dólares estuvo en la cima de la dirección de arte, Janet logró su apariencia otra forma. “Siempre he sido una chica poco femenina”, dice ella. “Siempre me ha gustado vestirse de rojo, negro y blanco, y sobre todo pantalones”. De la escuela iba a la casa para ver lo que necesitaba, a continuación, salía directamente a las tiendas”. Se ríe un poco y dice: “¿Sabes algo más? Le gustaba usar zapatos todo el camino. Le encantaba todo lo que brillaba”. El amor de Michael a todo lo que brillaba continuó hasta su muerte. Ese último día que Janet vio a Michael, “él vestía una chaqueta de Balmain. Tenía algunas de ella – todas negras, joyas, clavos, con piedras preciosas falsas”. Mientras que el público está obsesionado sobre lo que sucederá con la propiedad de Michael, incluyendo sus famosas chaquetas, Janet no está interesada en llevar algo para ella misma. “No”, dice enfáticamente. “Esas deben ir a los niños, en todo caso”.
Janet hizo una observación conmovedora acerca de la familia y la celebridad en junio durante los BET Awards (”Para tí, Michael es un icono. Para nosotros, Michael es la familia”). “Usted sabe, la gente ve de ti esto”, dice, señalando a la televisión. “Ellos tienen una fantasía en su mente, y llegar a conocer realmente a la persona verdadera, es diferente. Si Janet tendría un día más con su hermano (cuyo apodo para ella, por cierto, fue Dunk), sería para “revivir esos momentos que teníamos cuando éramos niños, hacer nuestra rutina diaria: Nos gustaba despertar, alimentar a los animales, pasar todo el día juntos”.
Ella sonríe evocando, y la sonrisa de Janet es magnífica. “La gente ha dicho realmente que debo haberla asegurada, pero nunca me gustó mi sonrisa hasta seis o siete años atrás. Pensé que era demasiado ancha, que parecía el Joker! Así que a veces mi sonrisa no es demasiado amplia y sería sólo una forma de sonreir”.
A pesar de que Janet tiene sus marcas – la sonrisa es uno de ellas – su estilo está evolucionando. Actualmente, en su lado más fino, ella está explorando su amor por la década de 1940: “Me encanta protectores de hombros, cintura cortada”. En el día de esta entrevista, ella está con pantalones harén de Ellie Mae Byars of Mizzae, una chaqueta vaquera, y los brazos llenos de pulseras negras por Claudia Tate. “Desde que tenía 16 años, solía comprar en Maxfield en Los Angeles, me gustaba Thierry Mugler, Gaultier …” Janet ahora es fan de Roland Mouret y Alexander McQueen, y ella tímidamente admite que sólo tenía una habitación construida para los zapatos: “Louboutin, YSL, Alaïa, y Giuseppe Zanotti”.
Para su tranquilidad y de todos, Janet es muy consciente de la imagen y el poder que tiene, sobre todo con las mujeres jóvenes. Y está completando un libro llamado “True You”, acerca de la dieta y la autoestima. “Originalmente fue acerca de la pérdida de peso”, dice ella. Famosa por su aumento y disminución de peso, Janet de deshizo de 60 libras en cuatro meses en 2006. Ella ha sido a su vez envidiada y criticada por su figura, que ha variado de una niña en su vídeo “Love Will Never Do (Without You)” de Herb Ritts en 1990 a musculosa (la infame “falla de vestuario” del Super Bowl en 2004) para verse más gruesa cuando se ausentó un tiempo de los escenarios. “Pero yo lo hacía motivada. Y puedo ser una comensal impusliva”. Su voz baja. “Últimamente, he estado haciendo eso, sí. Todo comenzó cuando yo era muy pequeña. Mis hermanos se fueron de gira mucho, y yo los extrañé mucho. Ciertas cosas en mi vida se convertiría en factores desencadenantes, motivadores. Ojalá hubiera tenido un libro como éste que cuando era joven. La gente olvida que todo el mundo tiene cosas que le están sucediendo”. Y con el álbum, la gira, el libro, película a venir el próximo año, Janet tiene mucho que hacer. “Es muy importante encarar la realidad, y no me estoy corriendo, pero a veces sólo necesitas escapar por un segundo”.
Janet también está sola por ahora, ya que recientemente rompió su relación de siete años con el productor musical Jermaine Dupri. ¿Todavía cree en el matrimonio? “Para [algunas] personas, seguro! No sé si me voy a casar de nuevo. [Ella se ha casado dos veces, cuando era adolescente con James DeBarge y luego con el coreógrafo René Elizondo.] Lo pondré de esta manera: Si Dios quiere que me case, entonces lo haré”. ¿Contactos? “Sí, he tenido invitaciones para salir. Pero no he entretenido ninguna oferta hasta ahora, pero estoy encerrándome en mi trabajo ahora mismo”. Algunos podrían decir que los chicos huelen de todos modos. “Sí, apestan”, ríe entre dientes, “y están sucios”.
Janet es igualmente fatalista sobre el tema de los niños: “Claro, me gustaría adoptar. Y creo que si estoy realmente destinada a tener hijos, va a suceder, si ese es el plan de Dios para mí”. No animaría a sus hijos al mundo del espectáculo “a menos que fuera algo que realmente quieren hacer. Sabiendo los pro y los contra”.
Si Michael es el rey del pop, Janet es su princesa. “Espero que mi legado sea llevar sonrisas a los rostros”, dice ella. “Que sean felices con mi música. También, para hacer bebés. He tenido muchas personas que vienen a mí y me dicen: ‘Mi hijo fue concebido escuchando tu música’”. Ella tiene más dificultades para articular de Michael. “Es tan allá. No puedo ni siquiera empezar. Está en niveles tan diferentes”. Trae luz, amor y felicidad. Él sólo tuvo tanto amor, y tan corazón y tal poder a través de su música. Los niños y su amor para los niños. La gente me han dicho: “Yo soy un ciudadano estadounidense a causa de su hermano. Él escribió una carta o algo así. No era más que dar, una persona cariñosa. Y el más grande artista que alguna vez fue. Y lo es. Espero que la gente tenga una visión ahora, algún tipo de imagen”.
Janet ahora se sienta sobre un imperio y una mitología familiar hecha en gran medida por ella misma y bajo su control, una icónica intérprete de luto por su hermano y planificando lo que se viene. “Sabes, nunca pienso en lo que he hecho a menos que me pregunten”, dice ella, “pero recuerdo que Mike me dijo: “Tienes que parar y disfrutarlo. Piensa en todo lo que has hecho, en todo lo que que has conseguido”.
“Pero hay mucho más que quiero hacer”, añade. Y la sonrisa se rompe de nuevo.

A Sony Pictures divulgou hoje o primeiro pôster de “Michael Jackson’s This is It”, documentário de Kenny Ortega previsto para estrear no Brasil em 30 de outubro. O filme foi montado a partir de 80 horas de imagens de ensaios e bastidores de Michael Jackson, quando o artista se preparava para uma série de 50 shows em Londres, a partir de julho, antes de sua morte em junho passado, aos 50 anos.
Sí, ya sé que todavía no estamos ni a la mitad de Septiembre, pero aún así pongo este post. Si en las tiendas departamentales (léase: Gual-Mart, Liberoul, Soriana, y demás) ya se ponen a vender los típicos artículos del Jalogüin, pues a mí también ya se me da la gana adelantarme. 1. Toy Story & Toy Story 2 Double Feature 3-D (2 Oct). Se trata de un relanzamiento de ls clásicos pixarianos para anticipar su apuesta del próximo año, Toy Story 3 (también en 3D por obvias razones), puesto que es su primer trilogía. Sólo para fanáticos de los filmes, la verdad, aunque a veces es imposible negar a Pixar. Anticipómetro: Hombre Lobo
2. Couples Retreat (9 oct). Una comiedilla “x”, que se centra en un cuarteto de parejas que vacacionan en un lugar donde se llevan a cabo sesiones de terapia quién sa pa’ qué. Actúan Vince Vaughn (tenía que ser), Jon Favreau (sí, el director de Iron Man y secuela), Jason Bateman, Kristin Davis, Kristen Bell, Malin Akerman (eaaah) y Jean Reno. 3. The Road (16 oct). Viggo Mortensen estelariza este filme como un padre que lidia junto con su hijo por sobrevivir en un mundo apocalíptico. Está basado en la novela homónima de Cormac McCarthy, la cual ha recibido buenas críticas. Este güey también escribió una novela cuya adaptación fue merecedora del Oscar a Mejor Película el año pasado. Anticipómetro: Hombre Lobo
4. Where the Wild Things Are (16 oct). Otra adaptación, esta vez del cuento para niños del mismo nombre, de Maurice Sendak. Dirigido por Spike Jonze, el filme es una extraña combinación de CGI, animatronics, live-action y suitmotion que parece encajar perfectamente con el “look” que tiene. Esperemos, y no lo dudo, que cumpla, porque suena (y se ve) bastante bien. Por cierto, Tom Hanks produce. Anticipómetro: Drácula.
5. Amelia (23 oct). Ya sé, y estoy casi seguro de que esta película (que suena a Oscar) probablemente la veamos hasta el próximo año, pero supongamos que llegue puntual… quién sabe… a lo mejor encuentran buena distribución. Como deben suponer, estamos ante una biopic de Amelia Earhart, la famosa voladora que se perdió en uno de sus viajes, también interpretada cómicamente hace poco en Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian por Amy Adams. Pero bueno, aquí la interpreta Hilary Swank, quien segurito se lleva una nominación al Oscar, y la acompañan Richard Gere y Ewan McGregor (en un papel que ya le hacía falta). 6. Astro Boy (23 oct). La adaptación de la famosa serie japonesa sobre un niño robot con poderes ironmaníacos, ahora en animación a computadora, y al parecer, en 3D (como ya es usual). La cinta es de Summit Entertainment y cuenta con las voces de un tal Freddie Highmore, el pendejo de Nicolas Cage, Bill Nighy, Kristen Bell, Matt Lucas, Charlize Theron y Samuel L. Jackson, quien parece que está en todo. La verdad no sé qué pensar de este filme, parece producto mierda, pero podría sorprender… uno nunca sabe. Anticipómetro: Orco
7. Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Asssitant (23 oct). Un filme, basado en, adivinaron, una serie de libros (12), de nombre The Saga of Darren Shan, o Cirque Du Freak, sobre un joven adolescente que se ve inmerso en el mundo de los, adivinaron, vampiros. Como que están de moda, ¿verdad? Bueno, pues el güey se une a un show con tipos extrañísimos y tiene una serie de aventuras. De hecho, la historia abarcará a los tres primeros libros, por lo que esperen $ecuela$ si ésta resulta exitosa. La cinta es estelarizada por John C. Reilly, Chris Massoglia, Willem Dafoe, Salma Hayek, Ken Watanabe y otros. Chris Brown won’t be crooning “I’ll Be There” in honor of Michael Jackson.
The “Forever” singer has put a kibosh on any plans to perform at the M.J. tribute concert in Vienna, hours after Jermaine Jackson announced Brown would be among the headliners at the Sept. 26 show.
“Chris is not confirmed to perform or participate in any capacity for this show,” Brown’s label publicist tells E! News.

The iconic crystal-encrusted white glove worn by pop king Michael Jackson has gone to the highest bidder for $49,000. The glove sold in Melbourne on Sunday was worn by Jackson in Sydney, in 1996, on the day he married Debbie Rowe. The white bejeweled glove was the first Jackson glove to go on sale since he died in June at the age of 50. The trademark glove was bought by a United States buyer and will go on display at the Hard Rock Cafe in Las Vegas.
Hace varios años Michael y yo estuvimos de vacaciones en Florida y una mañana temprano, Michael vino a mi habitación con SU cámara de video y empezó a grabar y me hizo pregunts sobre mi vida y porqué soñaba con ser director. Él siempre estuvo interesado en la gente y era curioso sobre sus esperanzas y sueños. Tras una hora, le pregunté si podía entrevistarle yo sobre su vida y sus sueños. Dijo que sí y me dejó su cárama. Cogí un boli y un papel y escribí algunas preguntas que pensaba que podían ser interesantes. Mientras le leía las preguntas en medio de la entrevista me di cuenta de que la cámara no estaba encendida. Así que la encendí. Tengo cientos de horas de los dos por ahí, de vacaciones, bailando y compartiendo nuestros pensamientos sobre la vida. Este video fue una conversación muy personal entre dos amigos y he quierodo compartirla para que la gente pudiera ver su humanidad y su gran corazón. La entrevista fue transcrita y publicada con el permiso de Michael en la revista Interview hace unos años. Podéis verla cuando querais. Él estaba contengo de compartirla y le gustaba que fuera una conversación entre dos amigos y no un periodista espiando su vida privada. No está a la venta y nunca lo estará.

Michael Jackson: Si, lo tenía: Berry Gordy, Diana Ross, Thomas Edison, Walt Disney, James Brown, Jackie Wilson…
BR: ¿Qué aprendiste de ellos?
MJ: Aprendí mucho de ellos – sobre cómo ser un visionario, como ser creativo, como ser persistente, como ser determinado y nunca rendirte, no importa lo que pase.
BR: ¿Cuál fue tu primer trabajo en la música y cómo lo conseguiste?
MJ: Mi primer trabajo, probablemente… Ufff… no recuerdo algo tan lejano. Tendría unos 6 años. Posiblemente fuera en Mr. Lucky’s. Actuamos allí.
BR: ¿Y cómo consiguieron el trabajo?
MJ: No lo se; mi padre lo sabría. Yo era demasiado pequeño.
BR: ¿Cuál fue tu primer impacto y la cosa grande que te pasó?
MJ: Mi primer gran impacto fue cuando nos fichó Motown. Hicimos una audición en Detroit y Berry Gordy invitó a nuestras estrellas favoritas que veíamos cuando éramos niños en Indiana: Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, los Temptations y Stevie Wonder, todos estaban allí. Y fue junto aquella piscina interior de aquella gran mansión, con mármol por todas partes, donde actuamos y todos se volvieron locos. Les encantamos. Y [Gordy] dijo, “Chicos, estan contratados”.
BR: ¿De verdad?
MJ: Si.
BR: ¿Y recuerdas ese día?
MJ: Oh, lo recuerdo.
BR: ¿Qué elementos de tu trabajo te hacen seguir trabajando cada día?
MJ: Quiero trabajar cada día, sólo la idea de crear mundos, es como tomar un lienzo, un lienzo en blanco, sabes, algo limpio. Te da [ilegible] y nosotros sólo tenemos que darle color y pintar y crear mundos. Realmente adoro la idea. Y tener a gente que lo ve e inspirarte cuando lo ven.
BR: ¿Qué cualidades tuyas te han ayudado a estar donde estás hoy?
MJ: Fe y determinación. Y práctica.
BR: Correcto. La práctica lleva a la perfección. ¿Qué hubieras hecho distinto en tu carrera sabiendo lo que sabes ahora?
MJ: ¿Qué habría hecho distinto? Déjame pensar… Practicar más.
BR: ¿Practicar más?
MJ: Practico mucho.
BR: ¡Practicas un montón ¿Queres practicar más? ¿Cuál es la mayor lección que has aprendido?
MJ: No confiar en todo el mundo. No confiar en cualquiera de la industria. Hay muchos tiburones. Y las compañías de discos roban. Engañan. Tienes que hacerles auditorias. Y es la hora de que los artistas se enfrenten con ellos, pero que se aprovechan totalmente. Totalmente. Se olvidan de que son los artistas los que hacen la compañía, no la compañía la que hace a los artistas. Sin talento, la compañía no sería nada mas que un montón de muebles. Y tienen a talentos realmente buenos que la gente quiere ver.
BR: ¿Cuáles son algunos de tus discos favoritos?
Mj: Mis álbumes favoritos pueden ser el Cascanueces de Tchaikovsky, los grandes éxitos de Claude Debussy, sabes, “Claro de Luna” y “Arabesco” y “Preludio a la siesta de Fauno”. Me encanta “What’s Going On” de Marvin Gaye y “Live at the Apollo” de James Brown y la banda sonora de “Sonrisas y lágrimas”. Me encanda Rodgers y Hammerstein. Me encantan los grandes compositores de melodías, adoro a Holland-Dozier-Holland de Motown, eran genios. Hay tantos grandes compositores, hay tantos buenos.
BR:¿Y otros discos, discos contemporáneos?
MJ: Grandes discos… es difícil porque los álbumes de ahora tienen uno o dos buenos temas y el resto apesta.
BR: O del viejo estilo, como Marvin Gaye o Sly.
MJ: Sly & The Family Stone, me encanta todo lo que hicieron. Stevie Wonder es un genio.
BR: ¿Qué disco?
Mj: Todos. Talking Book. Me encanta cuando hizo “Living for the city”. No recuerdo el nombre del álbum. Fantástico. Creo que era Innervisions, fantástico. Escuchando esta música me hace decirme a mi mismo, “Puedo hacer esto, y creo que puedo hacerlo a nivel internacional”.
BR: ¿De verdad?
MJ: De verdad, y entonces cuando aparecieron los Bee Gees en los 70, hicieron algo conmigo. Lloré. Lloré escuchando su música. Conocía cada nota, cada instrumento.
BR: ¿Algún poster en tu habitación cuando eras pequeño?
MJ: Si, de Brooke Shields por todas partes. Mis hermanas se ponían celosas y los arrancaban de la pared.
BR: ¿Qué grandes shows has visto en conciertos?
MJ: James Brown, Jackie Wilson. Los artistas reales, los reales, te ponen la piel de gallina.
BR: ¿James Brown? ¿Dónde le viste?
MJ: Solíamos salir al escenario tras su actuación porque cuando acababa había una hora amateur. Así que yo solía estar en un lateral estudiando cada paso, cada movimiento.
BR: ¿En la tele?
MJ: No, en el Apollo.
BR: Una hora amateur en el Apollo, ¿Y le viste actuar?
MJ: Si, y a Jackie Wilson. A todos ellos, a los Delphonics, los Temptations.
BR: ¿Pero recuerdas algún show? ¿Viste también a los Temptations?
MJ: Si.
BR: Pero ¿hubo algún show en el que dijeras, “Oh, Dios mio”?
MJ: James Brown, Jackie Wilson.
BR: ¿En el Apollo?
Mj: Si, me hicieron llorar. Nunca he visto nada igual. Ese tipo de emoción, ese tipo de fiebre, sentimiento, era como otro plano espiritual el que conseguían. Estaban como, en un trance, y tenían al público en las palmas de sus manos, simplemente adoraba como podían controlarles así, ese tipo de poder. Cuando cantaban tenían lagrimas cayendo por sus mejillas. Estaban tan metidos en ello…
BR: ¿Cuales son algunas de tus canciones favoritas?
MJ: ¿Mis canciones favoritas de todos los tiempos? Me encanta Burt Bacharach. Cualquiera de Motown, de los Beatles como “Eleanor Rigby”, “Yesterday”. Cualquiera de las Supremes. Todo su material es genial. Creo que los 60 tuvieron algunas de las mejores melodías de todos los tiempos como las de Peter, Paul and Mary y ya sabes, todos aquellos. Los Mamas and the Papas eran geniales. Y los Drifters fueron un poco (ilegible) pero me encanta su canción “On Broadway”, eran genios. Las más simples son las mejores (ilegible). Había tantas. Como películas, hay muchas grandes películas.
BR: Nombra algunas de las cosas que puede ser útiles a alguien que quiera romper en el mundo de la música.
Mj: Cree en ti mismo. Estudia a los grandes y te harás grande. Y se científico. Disecciona.
BR: Antes dijiste algo: No te rindas.
MJ: No importa lo que pase. Me da igual si todo el mundo está en tu contra o burlándose o diciendo que no vas a conseguirlo. Cree en ti. No importa nada mas. Muchos de los hombres más grandes y que han dejado huella en este mundo fueron tratados así, sabes, “No vas a conseguirlo, no vas a llegar a ninguna parte”. Se rieron de los hermanos Wright. Se rieron de Thomas Edison. Se rieron de Disney. Hacían chistes sobre Henry Ford. Decían que era un ignorante. A Disney le echaron del colegio. Y mira lo lejos que han llegado. Esos hombres han dado forma a nuestra cultura, nuestras costumbres, la forma que que hacemos las cosas. Y creo que Dios ha plantado a todas estas semillas a través de gente en la tierra. Y creo que tú eres uno, Yo soy uno que trae algo de dicha y escapismo, algo de alegría, algo de magia. Porque sin el entertainment, ¿cómo sería el mundo? ¿Sabes? ¿Cómo sería realmente? Sería un mundo totalmente distinto para mi. Me encanta el entertainment. Y lo que más me gusta es el cine. El poder y la magia de las películas. Es lo más grande, la más expresiva de todas las formas de arte. Creo que toca mi alma. La música y las películas son lo más expresivo. Es casi como la religión: Te ves tan envuelto, tan atrapado. Te metes en el cine y sale otra persona distinta. Afecta a tu forma de ser. Es poderoso. Creo que es muy fuerte. Me encanta.
BR: Cuando puedes hacer que el público sienta.
MJ: Si, si.
BR: Se ven relacionados con ello.
MJ: Si, lo viven. Son parte de de ello. Se olvidan que están sentados en una butaca.
BR: La experiencia de ver una película afecta a sus vidas.
MJ: A su vida completa. Puede cambiar sus vidas.
BR: Si, recuerdo estar viendo Star Wars en el cine cuando tenía 7 años. Es una experiencia distinta para Paris o Prince que la ven hoy en DVD que hace 27 años, cuando la vi y acababa de salir, con todo el shock de aquella época. Nadie había visto nada igual. Se vendían las entradas por bloques y ni siquiera pude entrar la primera vez. Tuve que volver al día siguiente y volver a intentarlo. El recuerdo de estar desesperado, con 7 años, por ver una película hizo más inolvidable la experiencia. La primera vez que ves algo así, afecta permanentemente a tu vida. Es como escuchar una canción o ver actuar a un artista por primera vez. Ir a ver a James Brown y que se te salten las lagrimas, es distinto que escucharlo en la radio 20 años después.
MJ: No puedo decirte lo increíble que fue. Adoro a los grandes entertainers, a los grandes artistas, a los grandes showmans, los grandes que cuentan historias. Sólo con verlos te quedas hipnotizado. Te quedas pillado. Me encanta. Ese foco, baby.
BR: Frank Sinatra
MJ: Si. Aquellos hombres eran geniales. Y Sammy Davis. Me encanta, todo lo que hizo. Es mágico, es realmente mágico.
I was walking toward my local metro (subway) and saw a Priest enter the metro, who was mumbling and nodding to himself as he flowed down the escalator. I decided to follow him and see where the lord and a priest would go on a Sunday night. So I tapped him on his shoulder and asked where he has been on a rainy Sunday night, he started to giggle and whisper in some language that is a mixture of Greek and peanutbutter-stuck-on-teethisholaninin. I started to tell him in pig Latin my troubles and dreams….. and what I did Saturday night…. he smiled, began to make a disappointing warning followed by a giggle, then he started to make colorful mimming how, I think, to something better for next Saturday night. My stop came, I waved goodbye, handed him a 40 and wondered where he was going….. maybe to Obama’s house, or maybe he was just going home to cry….. or maybe,….. just maybe, he was going to work to make biscuits for Popeye’s chicken…….. they are heavenly
