Since the death of Michael Jackson, there have been many people trying to throw dirt on the name of the “king of pop.” Many were trying to do so before his death, but some media outlets have waited until after death to tarnish his name.
BET, either intentionally, or unintentionally, has been ruining the name of Michael Jackson. They have only done one thing, but that one thing has been enough. The 2009 BET Awards was a mockery of a man that did so much for the network. It was understandable that the BET Awards are usually a showcase for ignorance and would have been one this year, but Jackson’s death was unexpected.
Because of his untimely death, the awards ceremony was turned into a “celebration” of his life as his parents, children, and siblings were in attendance. The performers were informed of the changes in time to be ready for the show, but they still lacked the proper respect for an artist that paved the way for every person that was there.
Popular recording artist, T-Pain, still came to the show with his chain that read “BIG ASS CHAIN.” That is very disrespectful when you come to perform at a show that was dedicated to the life of another human being. Then, Lil Wayne and Drake came out to perform their hits. Wayne tried to clean his verses up for the show, but Drake continued to utter the lyrics, unedited. Common sense would tell you that it is now time to clean it up.
Add to that the fact that R&B legend, Eddie Levert felt the need to curse everytime he held the microphone, he was better off staying seated. It was a live performance, so everything that was said was heard. Even the host, Jamie Foxx was in on the coonery, he also felt the need to curse. Of course there was the Ving Rhames/Tyrese Baby Boy skit that went way too far.
As a network that hosts an award show on a yearly basis, BET has to set some standards, rules of conduct or something. It was their responsibility to at least do this if they were going to dedicate their award ceremony to the life of another human being. The show was entirely disrespectful and BET needs to leave the man alone.
For his upcoming 51st birthday, BET plans to do another tribute honoring the life of Michael Jackson. To BET, do us all a favor and leave Michael Jackson alone, focus on acquiring rights to “The Game.”
